The Machine
The machine awoke with a roar.
The first shift was about to begin. It was still dark out, and the city was asleep. Just a few people were up, getting things started for the day. Soon enough, the city would wake up, stir, and pick up speed until it settled into its usual rhythm.
Her human was one of those people. There was work to do, and it was going to be a long, hard day. The two of them worked together like a single organism, a quiet partnership where neither could do much without the other. And there was plenty to be done.
The machine was showing her age now. Her body carried dents and scratches from years of use. Other machines stood nearby, newer ones, full of energy, moving with an almost playful ease, exchanging cheerful signals with one another. But her human looked after her. He knew the day couldn’t start without her.
He climbed on board and began waking her up, getting her ready for another day. She came to life slowly, as if she didn’t want to. Her metal parts creaked, and a loud, sharp sound cut through the stillness of the sleeping city. It sounded like an old dinosaur calling out somewhere in the distance.
She was tired. Time had left its marks on her. Yet she refused to give up.
Her human would take care of her once again, and together they would do what they had always did – finish the job, one more day.
